I have just installed the Beta2a and when I attempt to create a connection I get a version mismatch error:" The client is speaking version "4" and the server expects version "3".

This is a new default install; no migration, DERBY database.

Server status shows the database is connected, but admin does not allow me to modify any mail, database settings, etc.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks for all the input from the folks experiencing this problem. So far, it looks like people are accidentally downloading mismatched client and server due to a bug in the download page. We're looking into it and should get it fixed. In the meantime, double-check the second download and make sure you're getting the one you expect...
