The EnvDTE error has nothing to do with work items. It's to do with the VS Client integration with the Error List View and is harmless.
I've never seen a Visual Studio hang while scrolling down a list of work items. Is this consistently reproducible on that user's machine? What version of .NET framework does this user have? What version of Visual Studio? Does it happen for all queries that return long lists?

Could he try with other views such as the Histoory View - by doing Show History on a file that has lots of versions, to see if he can scroll down that list?

I have similar error in Visual Studio 2005 and RTC 2.0.0.2IFIX3.
Error when trying to perform checkin (failed to upload).
Please see the log.
It is not consistence. Restarting the VS solved it, until next time it happens.

yes, I have tried to change one file and then checkin.
It failed with the error message I have sent before.

It works and checkin succeed after I shutdown VS and then open again.

Regarding the DTE exception(nvDTE80.ErrorList.get_ShowErrors() ) its benign and can be ignored.
