Can I copy / paste work items within the same plan?

We have a number of the same tasks under various stories. I want to be able to copy/paste them from one story to another and then edit task attributes. Is there a way to copy/paste work items?

thanks,
Aysim

Hi,

I am not sure what you intend to do. If you want to move them from one story to another you can drag them from one story and drop them on the other story in a work breakdown view. That should change the parent.

If you want to duplicate (have almost identical twins under the other story) them you could open the work items and create a duplicate. As long as the planned for attribute stays the same the duplicate should become visible in the plan and you could use the move above to change the parent in the plan.

Hi Ralph,

I am not trying to move them from one story to another. I rather want to create a set of same tasks under different stories. The summary field, and planned for attribute for those tasks will be the same for each story we will edit the estimate and the owned by attributes individually.

I tried what you suggested for "making duplicate", it make the duplicate but I still need to type in the summary field. This is pretty much what we want to bypass. There are hundreds of stories, with very similar set of tasks.

I also tried to do the same with an import, see my post - you already replied - but could not get the imported items show up in the plan they are imported into.

Any other suggestions?

thank you

I would create a work item template. Unfortunately, you will still have to go through a few steps each time to create the hundreds of copies.

Your Import is probably not working because RTC is very picky about the naming of "Filed Against". I find that I have to export a work item to get that field name and then copy and paste it to the new work items. Try finding the work items that have been created (via query) and manually set the Filed Against field. But I don't think there is a way to set the parent Story...(hopefully I am wrong!)
