"Blocks" and "Depends On"

James Labrie (18123818) | asked Apr 06 '10, 4:46 a.m.
Hi,

I'm using RTC 2.0.0.2.
I have a question about "Blocks" and "Depends On".

In "Links" field of work item, "Blocks" or "Depends On" can be specified.
I have now following work items.

Task1 blocks Task2.
Task2 Depends On Task1.

How does they affect each other?
As far as I have checked, if Task1 is completed, the link in Task2 becomes strikeout text.
If Task2 is completed, the link in Task1 likewise becomes strikeout text .

Is that all effect between "Blocks" and "Depends On"?
Is there another effect besides the appearance?

Hi James,

No, there is currently no semantics attached to those links, beyond the
visual that you describe. The Rational Project Conductor project
<http> is working on
adding the semantics to those links.

Cheers,
Geoff

Hi,

I see not operational behavior that could be configured out of the box.
In general the Blocks relationship is used for dashboards and queries e.g. to display blocking defects. It adds semantic to a dependency.

It would be possible to create operational behavior based on that semantic however. E.g. one could develop a process extension that would for example prohibit resolving a work item while it is still blocked by an unresolved work item.

Hi Ralph

Thank you for the information.

I went through the link but I could not find the information I want.
Do you know what semantics will be added to the link "Blocks" and "Depends On"?

If yes, could you please let me know?

Thanks
James

Hi James,

I don't really have a lot more information available than you have.
I don't know what the Project Conductor or the Team Concert team is planning with this dependency.

Sorry,

Ralph
