I noticed that if I set an iteration as current in the Project Area Editor. I can't edit the Iteration Plans in that iteration anymore. I get an error stating that I do not have permission. Is this expected behavior?

You might have configured the permissions (in the process specification of your project area) for specific iterations. You could instead configure these under <team-configuration>, which will be used for all iterations.
