RTC and Subversion - Email notification after commit

Jim Williams (111) | asked Feb 27 '10, 9:32 a.m.
I noticed that I do not receive an email notification when a work item is updated following a commit to Subversion. The link to the revision is in the work item record. I just don't get the email saying that the record was updated. Should I be getting that email? I get emails when other parts of the work item are altered (e.g., I add comments to the wi).

Thanks,
Jim

Creating a link to a work item does not currently generate an email
(because the link is not part of the state of the work item ... it is a
separate object that refers to the work item).

Cheers,
Geoff

Makes sense if it is another object (although it seems like a pretty important thing to happen - commit - related to that work item), but then I am confused by the Mail Configuration options for users. If I look at a user's Mail Configuration options there is a line item for "Link added or removed". And it is on by default. What is that referring to?

Thanks,
Jim

I speculate that "link" in this case only refers to work-item/work-item
links that are created by the "Add ..." operation in the Links tab (or
perhaps by any link that is created by the "Add ..." operation in the
Links tab).

I've created work item 107421 asking that either all links generate
email, or the descriptive text on that page be updated to clarify what
links will generate email.

If you'd like email to be generated from particular links that aren't
currently generating email, please submit an enhancement request (and it
would be best to link such requests via a "related" link 107421).

Cheers,
Geoff

I think you are right. I just used the Add dropdown to Add Related work item and I got an email about that. I also tested doing a deliver of a change set and this also does not produce an email so it is consistent.

I think email notifications would be really useful in the case of integration with Subversion because a user can easily type in the wrong work item number in the work item text box on the commit dialog. If someone mistakenly types in a work item that I own, I would get an email saying that someone committed a change with my work item. I would recognize this as a mistake and get it corrected.

Another thing I would like to see is some action taken if the user types in a work item number (in the commit dialog) that does not exist. That user should receive an email about that mistake.

Let me know if you want to add these to 107421 or if I should open an enhancement request.

Thanks,
Jim

The request for getting an email when the user types an illegal number
in the Subversion bridge would be a separate request (filed against the
Subversion bridge). Note: I'm not sure if we have control over that,
since that is probably a Subversion UI, but it is worth checking.
