If I have only purchased the license for DOORS Next and has not bought any other IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management products, should Global Configuration Management be installed and configured during the DOORS Next installation?

If you want to baseline sets of requirements differently, and for example, link between one requirements module that is baselined while writing/editing another set of lower-level requirements, requirements, then Global Configuration Management will make this possible. In this scenario, Global configuration management makes possible (1) use of multiple components in a project area (a component is the scope of a baseline or stream); and (2) linking between requirements in two components.

Global configs are an advanced concept that puts on users more conceptual and process-related demands. So if you do not need GCs, then it's best not to turn on Global Configuration Management.

You can always turn it on later, but once you turn it on, you cannot turn it off.

Yu,

Question is more if you plan to use it. Global Configuration Management can be installed with IBM DOORS Next because it will be part of the license. The same way you are installing Lifecycle Query Engine and Report Builder.

If You do not plan to use it do not install it, if you plan to use it you can install it only having IBM DOORS Next license.

Thank you very much for your response. Your answer has given me a completely clear understanding of copyright. However, I still have one question that is not clear: regarding the usage scenario, if I have not purchased any other IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management products, in what scenario would I need to use Global Configuration Management?

Yu,

Global Configuration does not have a separate license for the product it self. If you have DOORS Next license you can use GC, Report Builder because you are entitled to do so as part of the DOORS Next license.

Summing up, it is enough to have at least one license for DOORS, Test Management or Change Configuration Management to use Global Configuration.

This is exactly the kind of usage scenario description I was hoping to understand. Thank you so much!
