Move the repository folders from one component to another replacing the soft links

Our developers are planning to move few folders from one component to another without losing the history of the respective files. But the symbolic links of soft links for respective folders are already exist in target component. While trying to move the folders, we see a error saying parent component already having the folder with same name. Is it possible to remove the symbolic link files directly and perform the move operation. Developers need confirmation that there will not be any issue after the above action. Please let me know in case of any information.
