Jazz Licensing

Torben Knerr (41112) | asked Nov 23 '07, 6:07 a.m.
Hello,

I have read somewhere that the basic components will be available only commercially, while other components on top of it may be available for free.

Is there a chance that there will be a free, usable subset of Jazz (including SCM)?

Also, are there any details on the licensing/pricing model for Jazz?

Kind regards,
Torben

Hey Torben,

Jazz technology will be available through commercial products from IBM. Pre-release code at jazz.net (both product betas and incubators) is, of course, available free of charge. When the products are generally available, you will need to purchase licenses for them. No details yet on this, we're working on it, stay tuned.

We have announced that we intend to make Rational Team Concert 1.0, our first Jazz-based product, available free of charge to universities for use in accredited curricula and academic research. We are also considering a similar policy for use in bona fide open source projects.

Dear John,

thanks for the information. As far as I understand the licencse agreement, we may not use the pre-releases for development in commercial projects, is that right?

I am asking because right now we have only played with Jazz using some simple example scenarios. However, in order to get a better impression how Jazz faciliates collaboration in larger teams, we would be eager to test it in a real life project. Would that be possible according to the license? Would it be possible to use Jazz for the development of (possibly commercial) products which we develop internally only, i.e. with no customers involved in the development?

Thanks and best regards,
Torben

Torben,
The "LICENSE FOR EARLY RELEASE OF JAZZ PROGRAMS" doesn't prohibit you from using Jazz for commercially related work as long as your use is in all respects in compliance with the license (which is presented to you at download time). We'd like people to evaluate the Jazz technology in realistic situations. See the "License" section where it stipulates that you may use the program during the evaluation period for "internal evaluation and demonstration as a tool You will use to develop Your software projects or products". Note also the Term section which defines the evaluation period.

Is there any chance of even a ballpark idea of licensing costs?

We are looking at the landscape of solutions like Jazz and the ideas here are compelling, but waiting until June to find out it's way out of our league would be souring to say the least.

We're in the range of 25 seats in a 100 person company.

Any ideas would help.

Hello,

i am a research assistant at a university, software engineering lab. We are planning to use Jazz and RTC in an upcoming research project. In the second post you mentioned, that RTC will be available free of charge for universities. Is it the same with the Jazz plattform (server) itself?

Best regards

Two outstanding questions here, one on pricing and one about use by universities.

On pricing, I posted a response to a similar question in another thread, https://jazz.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=797:
We anticipate making Rational Team Concert available for purchase around the middle of the year. We have not yet announced prices. We usually do so when we make the product available. Please stay tuned.

On use by universities, Rational Team Concert is our first product based on the Jazz technology platform. The Jazz technology platform includes the Jazz Team Server.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

Just a followup to John's answer... yes... when we say RTC will be available free for Academic use we mean both the RTC client AND the Jazz Team Server needed to make it work. There are packaging details to be worked out regarding the precise feature set that will be in 1.0 etc but you get the idea.
