Why is Epic WI allowed to be assigned story points at Release Backlog Plan

 Hi,
     The WI Epic has no field for complexity where story points can be added.

In a view of plan "Release Backlog", the column story point is displayed & points can be assigned to Epic.

What are the consequences if points are added to Epic WI and how will it affect the progress tracking?

The Epic work item type does not have story points. In the plan view, if I added "Story Points" in the Column Display, the story points for Epic work item is not editable.
In addition, the Progress column for the Epic shows the sum story points and estimates of child WIs which is also not editable.
I'm using RTC 5.0.2.
