I am looking at Iteration Planning, to move items from the Backlog right to Sprints, can I do this without viewing the Releases "tab/card"? How can I remove Release?

You can click on the "pin" operation (upper right hand corner) of the Backlog view, and then scroll over to the iteration you want. So you cannot "remove" the Release pane, but you can scroll past it to the one you want.
