What is the difference between "Copy Artifact" and "Duplicate Artifact" in DNG 5.0?

We are wondering what the difference is between the "Copy Artifact" and "Duplicate Artifact" gestures. If you select Copy Artifact there is no dialog until you select Paste Artifact.. but then you get essentially the same options. See below:

(Duplicate Artifact)
Duplicate Artifact

vs

(Copy Artifact)
Copy Artifact

Is one of these two features looking forward to changes coming soon? Such as VVC variant management support? There seems to be a motivation for having two options. How should we differentiate between them?

Hi Ian,

Check out the different use cases for "copy artifact" and "duplicate artifact" in the "New & Noteworthy" section of RRC 4.0.5.

We checked out the New & Noteworthy.. there is one option available for Copy Artifact that is not available for Duplicate Artifact that I can see.. with Copy Artifact you can Paste as Link to link to another artifact without actually creating a new artifact. But we are still confused why both copy and duplicate selections should offer the same reuse and duplication options. We are trying to understand why there are two options.

There are a couple of differences here.
1. "Paste as link" works across project areas, while the "duplicate" function works in a single project area only.
2. "Paste special" works in a module only, while the "duplicate" function works in the artifact view only.
I believe the use cases for these two functions are quite different. Specify the use case and determine which function is the right choice. If you want to duplicate the "content" of an artifact in a project area, you can even use "drag & drop". So the most important thing is what you want to do, not what the function can do.

What version of RRC or DNG are you using?  In 5.0, I do not see the "Reuse or Duplicate Pasted Artifacts" options in the Duplicate Artifact to Folder dialog.  They wouldn't make sense, since you already chose to duplicate, so perhaps this problem was already recognized and fixed.

From the Artifacts page, you should be able to Copy or Duplicate.  Copy will put the artifact(s) in the clipboard, which can then be used to paste it elsewhere or create a link.  Duplicate is essentially a shortcut for doing a copy and then pasting into a folder.  The "reuse" option does not make sense from the artifacts page, because you can't reuse artifacts across folders.

From within a module, there is only a Copy Artifact command, no Duplicate Artifact.  When pasting a copied artifact within a module, you will see the "reuse or duplicate" options in the dialog, because you can reuse artifacts within a module.

Hopefully this clears things up.  And if you are looking at a pre-5.0 version, then it looks like that confusion may have been in the UI, but has since been cleaned up.
