What does "CRRTC8500E: Server Error: The source control metadata for [...] is missing parent information" mean?

I have an out-of-sync folder.  When I click on "reload the folders" RTC spends a long time (about 20 minutes) "acquiring the file list" and then gives the above message.  1) What does it mean?  2) How do I get the files back in sync?
(Visual Studio 2010, RTC 4.0.4)

I get the same error in the Eclipse integration:
Problem Occurred: 'Computing local changes' has encountered a problem.  An internal error occurred during "Computing local changes".  The details say:
An internal error occurred during: "Computing local changes".
The source control metadata for 'C:/RTC_AFM/Main/AFME' is missing parent information

Also seems to be caused by swapping between Eclipse and Visual Studio RTC clients.  Is this not supported?
