Assign work item to Group instead of individual user.

I have a requirement to configure a work item type so that a work item is assigned to a team or group in RTC (rather than to an individual). The default behavior of work items
is to assign a work item to a particular user.
Based on the group that is chosen, the lead of that team or group would be assigned and notified of the new work item. Ideally, depending on the group that is chosen, the owned by attribute would be automatically populated with the lead of that group.
Is this possible and if so what is the best way to go about configuring this change?

This is done using the categories (filed against). Still the work item should have a dedicated owner. Learning over the years is: several owners Is no owner at al. See https://jazz.net/library/article/589 for the fundamental meta model. You can also add an attribute of type team area to implement team ownership but this is usually done using filed against.
