We have licenses of cognos BI and we have a doubt about cognos itself capabilities.

We are thinking to use cognos technology to access RTC data and create custom reports.

Can Cognos BI tool connect the RTC datawarehouse to extract information to create custom reports?

Is there any limitation that would force to use Insight instead?

I would recommend RRDI.  Its a free download, so at least trying it will only cost you time. Its designed to integrate with the CLM.  If you're only reporting on RTC, the additional capabilities in Insight won't be that useful.  If you do want to try Insight though, you can download it from jazz.net and install it.  You get a trial license good for 120 days before you have to buy the license.

For creating custom reports, you get the Report/Query Studio tools with RRDI or Insight that you are used to. The key is the data model and Framework Manager model.  You can get information about those from https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/CALMReportingDataModelDetails

If you have RTC 4.0 and will be using RRDI 2.0 or Insight 1.1.1 (just released current version), you may find these installation videos helpful:

hi Luis,

Yes, the Cognos BI Server can connect to the RTC data warehouse without Insight.  Just use Cognos Administration to create a data source and signon.  This is exactly what Insight or RRDI do.  However, you will have to create your own Framework Manager model, which you will get with Insight and would require a huge amount of work for you to build.  You also will not get the about 100 reports that Insight provides.

If you don't want to buy Insight licenses, you might try RRDI.  It is available from jazz.net and requires no additional licenses or costs.

The other significant feature present with both RRDI and Insight that you will not get with your Cognos software is the ability to securely integrate your Cognos reporting into your CLM applications. RRDI and Insight contain support for authenticating reporting users through the JTS so there is only one security domain. The FM model will enforce user authorization, so that a report user must be a member of a CLM project to be able to report on that project's data.  That prevents reports from showing data that the user cannot access with the CLM tool directly.  You can also run the reports from the RTC or RQM UI and include them in CLM dashboards, so users will not have to leave the product UI and go directly to the Cognos Connection portal.

In any case, you are getting the exact same Cognos software from either RRDI, Insight, or directly from Cognos.

What are your concerns regarding RRDI or Insight, given that the Cognos environment is identical?

Thanks a lot for your reply.

We were evaluating what is the best option.

We have cognos and RTC. What would be the best to create custom reports in less time? Reading what you posted above probably RRDI is easier.

We're trying to create custom reports that show the state of a SLA service provided using RTC as defect, task recorder. Reporting capability is important in our scenario.
