Can I automatically populate an attribute value when a Work Item is created via the Add-link?

I have a common enum attribute value called 'Customer' that I would like to be automatically set when you create a new Work Item via the Add-Links. For example, I have a Story, I go to the the links tab, select Add-->Related and select Create Linked Defect, when the new Defect pops up I would like its Customer value to be automatically set to the same value as the Story's it was linked from...  What is the easiest way to do this?
