Does the tilde (~) operator work as expected in quick query syntax in plan views?

As you probably guessed I'm having trouble making it work as described in the docs.
I've opened defect 218851 on this but I'm hoping I jumped the gun and it is just an operator issue (PEBKAC).

I have configured a category and two sub-categories.

A_Category
    A_Sub_Category
    Another_Sub_Category

I have a work item filed against A_Sub_Category.

If I filter for filedAgainst˜A_Sub_Category in a plan view it behaves as expected and filters the WI.
If I filter for filedAgainst˜A_Category it does not filter the WI as expected.

I was originally trying to use this with  !filedAgainst˜A_Category but when that didn't work I tried as above.

Anyone have success using this operator?

You've probably seen my comments in the defect. This does seem to be broken. Thanks for finding and filing it.
