Error! Can't initialize plug-ins directory - bfagent

Alex Togstad (21111) | asked Jan 20 '12, 5:09 p.m.
Windows 2008 R2 machine with just about all updates...

There was an old bfagent installed on this machine. I tried to uninstall from programs and features but got error ""Can't initialize plug-ins directory. Please try again later."

Rebooted, tried again.. same error.

Removed bfagent manually by deleting registry entries, and removing the service. Rebooted...

Now trying to install a new bfagent and get the same error. I've tried going into safe mode, sfc /scannow, chkdsk all fail to fix this issue.

The file installs on my Win7 box, so its def a problem with this specific box. Been looking for days for an answer, but none found. The only reference I found was that the c:\temp needed to have permissions.. It does.. I've deleted, and recreated and still seeing the error.

I right-click run as admin and see the error. Happens every time.

Windows error logs really sux. This error is so vague and there is NOTHING about it. Thanks MS for NOTHING!

Any other suggestions?

This is truly an odd error.

I cloned another good working machine, did a few MS updates, rebooted... Trying to remove bfagent 7.0.2.000123 and I get the error every time. WTF!

Please help!

BTW, I CAN remove, and install other applications....

If I do an MS search it finds Chinese users with a similar issue.

To Resolve:
My machines are in AD environment so I used another admin account to login to the machine. Once logged in I was able to goto 'programs and features' and remove the old bfagent without any issues.

I also had to install a newer bfagent with my 'other' admin user too.

It seems that the user which bfagent was installed under no longer had permissions to remove it. This is why another admin had to uninstall and install the application.

Any insight from the IBM guys? This a MS cluster f*ck, or a crazy install/uninstall issue? Do you need more info? What else can I look at? I'm still trying to dig into this issue more...

I wonder if clearcase is causing this issue.. it is another buggy application that's installed on my machine.... Ugh..
