View of all work items in a timeline regardless of iteration

Tom Boulet (111) | asked Sep 16 '11, 10:48 a.m.
I would like to be able to see a list of all high level stories and all their children stories and sub tasks regardless of which iteration/sprint they have been assigned to.

I know I can see the ghost high level parent of a task in a plan, but plans only show one iterations worth of work. I would like to see across iterations.

That alone would be nice, but ultimately, I would like to see this in a hierarchical view with status. It would also be nice to see this in a gantt chart form with columns showing the iteration the work item is planned for.

I don't see a way to do this even with a query. Not sure how to query for parent and all children work items.

Thanks.

You can use the "release plan" to see all stories and tasks for a top
level iteration. But you cannot create a release plan for a milestone
.... so as a workaround, I commonly create a single top level iteration
in the milestone, and place all other iterations under that, which then
allows me to see all work items in the timeline in a release plan. Use
the "work breakdown" plan type to get a nested display.

To get a gantt chart form, it is best to use the Formal Project
Management process template.
