Can someone explain the My Work eclipse view?

Just trying to understand how work items appear in one's inbox. And what changes when they are "accepted"?

Also, how does it determine current work from future work?

Some of this may depend on your process template - but my understanding is that a work item appears in the Inbox when it is assigned to you. Accepting will try and schedule it in the current sprint/iteration. Future work is work that is scheduled for future sprints/iterations (but still assigned to you).

We are essentially using the scrum process template.

I don't think it can determine how to set the "Planned For" field when you accept the work item. But clearly some other state is set that removed it from the list...

So, why in the world do some completed work items, owned by someone else, for an iteration that had passed show up on my Future Work pane??
