increase in asset count_while updating asset with new versio
4 answers
Hi,
I'm afraid I don't know what that means. An asset identification is a
combination of guid/version. If you create a new version but keep the
old one around then you have two assets.
You can change the version of an existing asset. That is basically an
update of the existing asset and just giving it a new value for the
version. That would be treated by RAM as being no different than just
changing the description. It is still the same asset.

Hi Richkulp,
Here I dont want to loose the old version details.Pl guide me how will I achive this without increasing the asset count since it is a new version for the existing asset.
Iam following below procedure for the same.pl correct me if I am wrong.
Procedure :
1.In My Dashboard or the Asset Details page, click the Create new version icon ( ). The Submit an Asset wizard will open.
2.On the Describe page, type a new version in the Version field.
3.If necessary, modify any of the asset's descriptive attributes, attached artifacts, categories, or relationships.
4.After making any necessary changes, click Submit.
Creating a new version of an existing asset provides the following additional benefits:
Instead of entering all of the information for a completely new asset, you can modify the previous artifacts and asset metadata from the existing asset.
Rational Asset Manager will display other versions of an asset and allow you to browse to older and newer versions of an asset from the General Details page.
Bookmark an asset and remove the version number from the URL to have a bookmark that will always open the newest version of an asset.
Users will be able to find and see older versions of the asset.

hi,
I'm afraid I still don't understand what it is you want. All I can tell
you is how RAM works.
A) If you just go into "update" on an asset and from there change the
version you still have the same physical asset, it just has a change
made to it, i.e. a new version. This would be no different than just
changing the name of the asset. It is still be the same physical asset.
B) If you click on "Create new version" all RAM does is make a COPY of
the existing asset and lets you update it as you wish. It is a brand new
asset. It just has the same GUID but a different version number as the
previous asset. That is RAM's way of knowing they are connected to each
other, by having the same GUID. So now you have two assets, the original
untouched one, and the newer one you just created.
That is it. In all other respects they are two physically separate assets.

When you update your asset, and change it's version ... RAM will ask you if you want to create a New asset, or replace the existing one.
If you replace the existing one, you have lost the old content, and both versions point to the same asset.
If you create a new asset, you now have 2 versions of of the "same GUID" asset.
You can say that you have two asset, or 1 asset with two versions.
