Requirements for using custom external comparison tool

I want to use a custom compare and merge tool with the RTC client for Eclipse. What are the general requirements/steps for doing so? I've taken a look at the RTC help and also the following wiki page:
http://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/SCMExternalCompareEditor

I see that I must specify the executable location and arguments. Is it safe to say then that as long as I can pass the files to compare and merge as arguments to my custom tool, written in Java, I can then use it with RTC? What other steps, if any, must be taken?

Thanks very much in advance,
Murad Korejo

Yes. The tool runs in a separate process, so it doesn't need to be a java app.
