Initially when i create a new project there are several work items which are created automatically. Is there any way of disabling those work items to be created?

Yes this is possible. The creation of the initial work items are performed by a project creation follow-up action. If you open the project area editor and switch to the "Process Configuration" page, then in the Configuration tree expand to the "Project Configuration > Project Area Initialization" you'll see in the right a server follow-up action called "Setup Project". This creates streams and work items. You can customize it or update the template you use so that new projects have a different initialization behavior.
