Will Client 2.0.0.0 work with Server 2.0.0.2?

We have upgraded our servers to 2.0.0.2 but not all of our users have upgraded their clients. Someone added sym links to a stream and now the users with old clients are getting this error (I got this trying to show the history of a component):
We tried removing the sym links but can't get the older client past the error. Is the only work around to get everyone to upgrade to 2.0.0.2?
An error occurred while updating this part. The part's contents may be out of date and need to be refreshed. Check your log for details.
Reason: The response to this request could not be returned to the client because it references a new feature (symbolic links) that an older client cannot support without upgrade. Please
upgrade your client.

Yes, the sym links still exist in the history of the component so an older client will not be compatible. Upgrading the client to 2.0.0.2 is the only solution unless you create a new component and move the files over (effectively erasing the change history).
