What is the maximum comment size that can be added to a work item?

It is 32K. Longer comments will be shortened and the entire comment
saved as an attachment.

Patrick answer seems not right for current version 7.0.2: trying to save a long comment (192K), we get an error instead the behavior described.

Yes, when trying to save exceeding the input size, you typically get an error. This is true for attributes such as string, HTML etc, too.
