Non-Conventional Use of the Resolution Field on a Work Item

I am customizing a work item based on the Problem work item type.  
Instead of creating a complicated workflow, I would like to use the "Resolution" field as a sub status field.

Is this doable?  Is this recommended?  Is there an alternate solution?

No, this is not a good idea. Resolution can also only be set in a state transition as far as I can tell. Use a workflow. it is up to you to not make it complicated.
