What are the complexity and ranking attributes used for in a plan?

I am configuring Plan in the eclipse client and see I can configure the Plan Attributes tab the Complexity and Ranking attributes.  What are each of these attributes used for in relationship to be plan?  While you're at it, if you can explain the Attribute Mapping section, that would be helpful as well.  Thanks!
