It is possible, with the only difference that you won't *see* the exact numbering.
The "Backlog" view mode does exactly that, as does any view mode where the "Sorting" option is set to "Ranking".
If you change the ordering of the plan items in either the Eclipse UI or Web UI, the exact ordering is stored.
Why is it implemented like this? This allows the ordering of the work items being reflected and modified in multiple places, eg in a product backlog as well as in a sprint backlog, even if both plans do not show the same items.
Does this work for you, or is there a specific reason why you would need to see such number?
Note that there's enhancement 78711 (https://jazz.net/jazz/resource/itemName/com.ibm.team.workitem.WorkItem/78711) to be able to sort arbitrary work item queries by the "Ranking".

Is it possible in Jazz to have an ordered backlog list of say 300
items with them numbered 1 - 300 ? If so, how would I go about doing
it ?
