What kind of scripting is supported inside the step command?

I am looking for the information on what kind of scripting can be included inside the step command. Can I write perl script, Unix shell? Please give me a link to the official doc.

e.g. I want to parse a string "y,y,n,n" and assign the values to four environment variables.
