How is RTC 2.0 licensing going to work?

Maurice Forte (46106) | asked May 29 '09, 10:19 a.m.
I currently have a RTC 1.0.1 floating license server setup and have configured all my Jazz Team servers to point to it. Is RTC 2.0 going to support floating license servers? If so, will I be able re-use my existing floating license server simultaneously supporting 1.0.1 and 2.0 jazz team servers or do I need separate floating license servers for 1.0.1 and 2.0? I am hoping I can re-use my existing floating license servers for both.

Also, how is the licensing going to be handled for internal deployment? Will it be handled the same way as other Rational products via the Rational License Key Manager where you go and order the number of licenses needed?

Thanks,
Maurice Forte

In 2.0, it should be possible to use a single 2.0 floating license
server to serve both 1.0 and 2.0 licenses.

You shouldn't use a 1.0 license server to server 2.0 floating keys,
because there were some changes in the 2.0 keys to better support
translated text in the licenses.

I don't have any info about the Rational License Key Manager use

Relative to Enterprise Edition licenses, since 2.0 removes the 250 dev user limit, how will these licenses be separated from say Standard Edition licenses? Can they both be served from the same 2.0 floating license server? Will they be separate licenses or the same, where a customer purchases or IBM internal downloads a given number of licenses and installs them on a 2.0 license server?

RTC Enterprise 2.0 removes the 250 developer limit on the server, but it
doesn't introduce any new Client Access Licenses. If you have an
Enterprise server then you would not be restricted from using only 250
developer CALs.

The CALs for Standard and Enterprise will be the same, so a single
floating license server could serve both Enterprise and Standard
servers.

Will RTC2 use the same licensing architecture scheme as ClearCase?

Will there be the ability to have multiple license servers with failover?

ClearCase allows you to use either FlexLM or "Atria Licensing".
RTC uses the Jazz license server, so although there are architectural
similarities between these licensing architecture schemes, you cannot
(yet) use the same license server for both RTC and ClearCase.

I don't think you currently can have a Jazz license server fail over to
another Jazz license server, but I could be wrong there ... Matt would
know for sure (:-).

Cheers,
Geoff
