Removing ghost custom attributes completely

I have deleted custom attributes from work items, but they still show up in the custom attributes list when I create queries. How can I completely get rid of these ghost fields from RTC?

Task 78594: Filter custom attributes that are not used any more from query editor by default https://jazz.net/jazz/resource/itemName/com.ibm.team.workitem.WorkItem/78594 tracks this.
