Error: Unexpected call to method or property access on IE8

We have run into this issue on IE8 which prevented a user from changing status and which seemed to have been fixed by assigning all roles to the user to overcome any permission issue, but that may have been very coincidental.

We got into intermittent encounters with the same error (Unexpected call to method or property access) on IE8 when exploring approvals on a Change Request WF. It did not show up in Firefox.

On Google, this looks like a common error with IE8 under mysterious circumstances.

Anyone has run into this error, which affect the use of RTC Change Management (WI) somehow ? Can we compare notes.

Better yet, is there a way to get around this on IE8, besides staying off IE8: it is our standard browser here with few exceptions.
