Is it possible to add a custom property to a work item that will display workitem query results?

I realize I can add a links tab and a links section and create parent<-> child linkages and the list of child work items will show in the parent links section. I really need  to see those children along with a set of their attributes - in much the same format as you get from query results. To get that list I can run a work item query but it would be nice to be able to add an attribute to a custom work item that when "selected" would execute a query and display the results right within the work item being worked on.

I'm not aware of any mechanism to provide this.
http filtered value set will execute every time
you might be able to create a new variable type, but it will execute every time too.
(and u have to implement it twice, web and eclipse),

there are no 'pushbutton' type operations.
