An attribute is assigned with Type integer and added in editor presentation of work item. When the work item is created the field which has integer type automatically carries a value of zero. Is this any sort of expected/default behavior for attributes of type integer?    If so how can we remove the zero for the field and make it null?

The behavior you are seeing is as designed and expected for attributes of integer type. 

However, to remove zero and make it null, there is this RFE that you can track, subscribe to or update:
