Why are answer comments limited to 1200 characters?

This is a "meta" question about the forum itself.  Why are answer comments limited to 1200 characters?  Sometimes I need to ask for clarification to an answer or pose a follow-up question, in which 1200 characters is not enough.

er, because we made it that way. I think the default for an OSQA forum is 600 and we've set it at 1200. I'm not sure who chose that value nor the implications, if any, for changing it. The underlying database field holding the text could hold a much larger field.

Thanks for the answer.  Given that questions and answers have no size limit, can we also have no size limit for comments (or at least a more reasonable size limit)?
