Workarounds and Limitations: Known issues in IBM Rational Quality Manager 5.0
The following known problems are related to the Rational Quality Manager 5.0 release.
Workarounds
The following problems in this release have workarounds:
- Problems opening the Rational Quality Manager importer from Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word
- The reconciliation with requirement collections fails with a timeout error
- When you use the “OAuth” XDC Authentication Type, the Quality Management ETL fails
- Rational Quality Manager logs too many “SRTServletResponse setStatus WARNING” messages in the WebSphere Application Server SystemOut.log
- Text in the editor might be displayed in a language that is not installed
- In version 4.0.6, test scripts that do not contain keywords show an error message about containing nested keywords
- An out-of-memory error can occur in the Java heap if the REST API makes repeated calls to fetch the project history
- The generation of test cases to PDF reports fails with a java.lang.StackOverflowError exception
- When Collaborative Lifecycle Management is used in a distributed environment, the OAuth window refuses log in and returns an HTTP status 403 error because the user ID does not have the correct roles assigned
- When Collaborative Lifecycle Management is used in a distributed environment, the OAuth window refuses log in and returns an HTTP status 403 error when the user ID has the correct roles assigned, because the Jazz Team Server identifies the request as a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attack
- TCERs cannot be generated for a large number of test cases at one time
- Categories cannot be saved if they have the same name as a different category type in the same hierarchy
- Test case results cannot be opened if requirement links were removed from the associated test case and manual test script steps when in a read-only state
Limitations
The following problems in this release do not currently have workarounds:
- The screen capture tool does not work with Oracle Java 7 u51 and later
- Multiple steps are created when you use Rational Functional Tester 8.5.1.X and Rational Quality Manager 4.0.6 and 5.0 for manual test script recording
- Online migration is not supported for upgrading some versions of the Quality Management application

Problem
In Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word, when you try to open the Rational Quality Manager importer, the expected window might not open. This issue is related to the language setting of the computer. If the language is set to English, the importer works. In other languages, you might notice unexpected behavior, such as the importer window not opening.
Workaround
Complete these steps:
- On Windows 7 operating systems:
- Open the Control Panel and click Clock, Language, and Region > Change location.
- Change the format to English (United States).
- Change the location to United States.
- On Windows XP operating systems:
- Open the Control Panel and click Regional and Language Options.
- Change the location to United States.
- Change the standards and formats to English (United States).

Problem
This problem occurs only in environments where IBM HTTP Server is configured as a reverse proxy, typically in a cluster environment. In test plans in Rational Quality Manager, the reconciliation with requirement collections fails and responds with a server error. The reconciliation fails after a fixed period of time. In the details of the reconciliation failure, you might see one of two error messages:
- Gateway Time-out The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.
- Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Workaround
In the plugin-cfg.xml file, within the <ServerCluster/> tags, set the ServerIOTimeout values to 0 so that the connection will not time out. For more information about the plugin-cfg.xml file, see the “Editing the Web server plugin_cfg.xml file for idle standby” and the “Server cluster” sections in Setting up servers for a basic high-availability configuration.

Problem
If the value for the “XDC Authentication Type” advanced property is set to “OAuth”, the Quality Management ETL fails.
Workaround
Change the “XDC Authentication Type” advanced property to “Form”. For more details, see Configuring the XDC files.

Problem
This problem occurs when Rational Quality Manager is installed on IBM® WebSphere® Application Server and tracing warnings are enabled. When you run Rational Quality Manager, it logs too many SRTServletResponse setStatus WARNING messages in the SystemOut.log file of WebSphere Application Server.
Workaround
Complete these steps:
- Start the WebSphere Application Server administrative console and log on, if necessary.
- Click Troubleshooting > Logs and Trace to open the Logging and Tracing page.
- Click the name of the server that you want to configure; for example, server1.
- Click Diagnostic Trace.
- Click the Runtime tab.
- If you want to write your changes back to the server configuration, select Save runtime changes to configuration as well.
- Change the existing trace state by changing the trace specification to the required state. In this case, turn off warning tracing.
- Click Apply.

Problem
When you edit an artifact, some context menus, toolbar labels, and tooltips in the editor might be translated into the browser-preferred language even if that language is not selected in IBM Installation Manager during installation. In Rational Quality Manager, you might encounter this issue in these instances:
- In rich text sections of artifacts, such as the Test Case Design, Business Objectives, and Test Suite Design sections
- In custom rich text editor sections
- In the test script editor when you edit steps
- In execution steps when you run a test case execution record
This issue occurs because the editor provides its own language pack. If the matching language version is available, the editor is displayed in the user’s language. If not, the editor is displayed in the default language, which is most commonly English.
Workaround
For consistently translated text in the editor, ensure that you select any required languages in IBM Installation Manager when you install the server. For an existing installation, you can modify the language selection in IBM Installation Manager.

Problem
This problem was observed in milestones of version 5.0, but is fixed in the 5.0 GA release. The problem has also been observed in version 4.0.6 and earlier.
On a machine where a browser is running on Oracle Java 7 u51 or later, the screen capture tool does not work. If you try to open the tool, a security exception is thrown. The exception mentions that a required permissions manifest attribute is missing.
This issue is a known problem. Contact IBM Software Support for a resolution.

Problem
When you use the manual test script recording feature in Rational Quality Manager, duplicate repetitive steps are added to the manual script that is created. For instance, when you record a sequence of “Step 1, Step 2”, the resultant script is “Step 1, Step 1, Step 2”. This pattern continues to “Step 1, Step 1, Step 2, Step 1, Step 1, Step 2, Step 3”, and so on.
This issue is a product defect. No workaround exists other than to edit the generated script to remove the redundant information. This issue will be fixed in the next maintenance releases of versions 4.0.6 and 5.0.
