Hi Virginia,
there is a technote detailing how quick search in RTC is implemented with Lucene, mentioning how the fields are mapped for searching. Custom fields you add to a work item are automatically searchable - as long as they are based on a searchable type. I just tried with adding a large string custom attribute to my work items.
