Work item type not available in Visual Studio client

Karthik Krishnan (8825117163) | asked Mar 16 '12, 5:15 a.m.
Hi,

I have a strange problem in Visual Studio client

Use case 1: In a project area where I am an administrator, when i click on Work Items->New->Work Item, I get a popup where I can select the work item type I want to create. No problem

Use case 2: In a project area where I am NOT an administrator, when i click on Work Items->New->Work Item, I get a popup with empty list. I cannot create a work item via Visual studio client

The behavior is seen only in Visual Studio client. Eclipse and Web works perfectly fine

Environment:

* Visual Studio 2010 Professional Trail version with Service Pack 1
* RTC Plugin 3.0.1 for Visual Studio
* RTC 3.0.1 CCM & JTS

Any idea if this is a bug?

Note: I eve reinstalled the plugin but has same effect

It could be some configuration issue. Can you please check the following:
1. You have been assigned a role in the project area.
2. The role that has been assigned to you has permissions to create workitems.
3. You are added as member in both Project Area and Team Area.

Hi Prabodth

Thanks for your reply

Yes I have roles assigned in both the project areas.

Like I mentioned this behavior is seen only on Visual Studio client. I am able to create work items in Eclipse and via Web browser

Just tried the following

In the Project area where I am only part of "Team area",i added myself in Project Area, and then I was able to create Work items via Visual Studio

But we want to maintain users as part of team areas and not in Project areas

Can this be avoided in VS?

Karthik

Thanks Karthik.
Yes, this is a VS Client specific issue and we are already addressing this in the next upcoming major release.

Thanks ,
Sai

'188205: Unable to fetch work item types when root category is not associated with Team Area' tracks this. It has been resolved for 3.0.1.3 and later releases.
