Merging 2 Project Templates into a Single Template

Michael Whitner (5611010) | asked Feb 13 '12, 2:05 p.m.
I am new to RTC (I've done a lot of reading but, I've had a little hands on experience) and I have been given a task to perform. This task consists of merging project templates from 2 different RTC (v3.0.1) projects into a single combined template. The projects are hosted on 2 different Jazz Team Servers. Once the templates have been merged both projects must be updated to use the combined template and the data in both projects must be mapped to the new template. Both templates appear to be based on the "Scrum" template. One template has some customizations and the other has been customized heavily.

I'm looking for some guidance on how to
1) perform the merging of the templates and
2) approach applying the combined template to these projects.

I believe that I can export the project templates to the file system (non zip format) and then merge them into a single combined structure so I capture files in the respective exported process templates' attachments directory. I can then manually merge/edit the text (*.txt) files to include the information from the respective templates into the single combined file. I'm not exactly sure what to do with the *.messages, *.htm and *.zip files at this moment.

As for what to do with the combined template (assuming I get this far) keeping in mind that both projects will remain on separate Jazz Team Servers. Should I try to apply the combined template to the existing projects or should I create new projects using the combined project and import the old projects into the new projects somehow and perform some type of mapping of the data during the import operation.

I'm sure I will become a regular here seeking information initially and hopefully some day in the not too distant future providing guidance to others just getting started.

Thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide.

The mechanism you describe for merging two templates is theoretically
possible but likely to be very error prone. You are probably better off
figuring out what has been changed in the process template with fewer
changes, and then re-creating those changes in a copy of the other
process template.

For updating an existing project area with a new template, see the
thread "Changing templates".

Agreed on the method of merging. My fear is that I'm a mere novice and I'll overlook something hidden by the editor. Some view I didn't see, some box I should have checked, etc.

I'll be sure the read through the "Changing templates" thread on this forum.

Thank you so much for your response and guidance. Hold tight this may be a bumpy road (process) for me.
