linkPublisher not working for url to a folder using client

I'm trying to add a link to the file system where I'm copying the binaries to but no matter what I try it the external link doesn't work when using the thick client. If I try the same link through the web ui it will work just fine.

What have other people done for this?

I've tried changing the preferences to use the external web browser and even when and selected IE. Still nothing.

The thick client gives me an error 'Resource is not a file: \\host\some\path\bldLabel

The url I used was file://hostname/some/path/bldLabel
I also tried \\hostname\some\path\bldLabel
