What can be done if we want that only the owner of the Workitem (any Workitem) or the subscribers in the workitem can change a particular status of the Work item, not anyone else in the project area members list. Don't want to add any approvers to the workitem.

You should add a comment indicating your support for work item 88779,
which asks to make the "creator" of a work item to be a special role
that is built-in to the system.
