Can I delete an attribute from the configuration-data

I had created a number of custom attributes which I now plan on dropping from my work item types. I dont wan them to show up in the query as it can be confusing. Can I simply delete these from the configuration-data tab in the "Process Configuration Source" tab of the project?

It's not recommended that user modify the process source directly.
