Setting up light-weight Rational Reporting / Cognos Server
I am required to provide a short-term solution to the limitations of out-of-the-box RQM Reports. This is ahead of Rational Insight being deployed.
We use RQM v2.0.1.1 iFix2! Firstly, I would like to confirm my suspicions based on what I've read in all the material available: 1. We could use BIRT. But this is not supported 2. Reports created by Rational Reporting CANNOT be deployed to an RQM Server. They can only be run by connecting the Cognos feed to the RQM Reports in the Project Area Secondly, I would like the following advice: 1. Can I deploy Rational Reporting WITHOUT the ETL & Datawarehouse? 2. Can I deploy on the application to the same server as RQM i.e.: no ETL/RIDW therefore must be reduced foot-print In answering question 2, whilst the test community is large, only a select few will be maintaining a common set of customised reports Hope you can help, Simon |

It's not clear what kind of reports you want to generate.
Here my idea's: 1) Depending on the reports maybe your customer might be able to utilize Rational Publishing Engine. It's does not need seperate server and it generates documents/reports as you want. 2) I like the idea of a Slim-down version of RQM/CR without the ETL. It is possible to run reports against life data (direct to RQM DB, without the ETL). But I'm sure there will be some limitations there, eg. the trend reports will give some issues while where is the history data? Furthermore, generating reports on a life database will take longer (personal assumption) while the data is not optimized for reporting. So it boils down again, what do you want to accomplish? |
Hi, Sorry for the delay in responding
It's not clear what kind of reports you want to generate. I simply want to revamp the RQM reports to provide something that works for the test teams here. The OOTB reports do not. Examples of reports are: --Requirements to Test Execution Result (tabular snapshot), --Plans^Milestones^Builds to Test Execution Results (trend/bar chart per build) --Plans ^ Milestones ^ Test Authoring Progress (trend). Most of the complaints are the fact that the build does not figure in the OOTB reports. I do understand the limitations re: trending data. However, the trends that are close to the test cycle are already built into RQM e.g.: Execution Results against Test Milestones and Test Plans. So this won't limit the live reports I want to develop for the test teams here. 1) Depending on the reports maybe your customer might be able to utilize Rational Publishing Engine. It's does not need seperate server and it generates documents/reports as you want. RPE is being looked at, but we are leaving this for a while as the need is for server-side/brower-based reporting: an enhancement of the browser-based reports in RQM. 2) I like the idea of a Slim-down version of RQM/CR without the ETL. Is this possible? So it boils down again, what do you want to accomplish? A light-weight and quick deployment of a Custom Reporting Service that allows us to put together a set of customised RQM reports. Note this may be an interim solution. However, there is interest in other areas of my work for a faster-lighter deployment of RRDI Thanks, Simon |
