Using https://jazz.net/wiki/bin/view/Main/ProgrammaticLinkCreation I have created a new link type. Now that the plug-in has been added to the server (via feature, then update site) the link is available and working as expected in the web UI but it is not showing in the Client UI.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Yes. You must also ship a plugin for the client that provides the same link, and have that plugin installed.
