Query to show the dependent work items

How to create a custom query to show all the dependent work items(child work items) given a work item number(parent work item) as a parameter?
Is that possible with RTC queries?
If not is there any alternative?

Not sure if I got you right, the workitem explorer provides a relationship view. It can be enabled in the view's menu. If you just select the 'Children' relationship you'll see all "dependent" workitems.

Hi Jan,
I dont want to open a work item to see all its children. Instead am looking for a query which when executed takes a parameter (work item #) and shows all the dependent work items in the work items view.

I think this can be achieved in reports. But want to know if there are any ways to do it at Query level. Just trying something like dynamic queries in a database like Oracle.

Thanks, Vijay Anand R

Vijay,

now you got me wrong. The work item explorer, once configured, shows relationships already. No need to open any of the work items or to run a specific query.

Anyway, just wanted to clarify that.

Jan.

Vijay,

What Jan is saying is that you can search for a Work Item (your input) and customize the Work Items view to show the dependencies you want, without the need of a query.
You would need to edit a query every time your parent work item changes, so his proposed solution is a more practical alternative.

I would like to actually run the query to export the results. So the question still stays - how do we run the query to find all child work items of that parent.
