Visual Modelling

Robert Farrugia (5614) | asked Feb 20 '08, 10:15 a.m.
Some time ago i had enquired the state of integration between JAZZ and Visual Modelling. I know that rad 7.5 has been integrated with Jazz, though i would like to ask if any other users has integrated the Rational Team Concert with a Visual Model component. By visual model i refer to uml diagrams and so on.

Robert

It is my understanding that as of RTC M5, you can install the RTC client
into an existing RSM 7.0.5. I do not believe it will work with earlier
versions of either one.

Steve - this is great news. RSM and RSD 7.0.5 (Rational Systems Developer) both run on Eclipse 3.3.2. The 7.0.5 is significant, this is the very latest release and there is only one "0" in the release number.

Thanks for pointing this out.

hi guys,

thanks for the info... i read the new and note worthy of the RTC m5 and didn't find any information regarding this integration. Has any one tried it? Was it documented any where in Jazz.Net?

I am not aware of any material on this. What we should be able to do is use the RTC client as the Eclipse "base" - and install RSM/RSD as a plugin into an existing Eclipse instance. You would need to run the RSM/RSD installation manager program to install into RTC and select the "install into existing Eclipse instance". I have not done this kind of install for a while - but I recall the Installation Manager looks for existing Eclipse instances when you start the installation manager.

If I get a chance to try this anytime soon - I will post the results, or hopefully someone else can give this a try and tell us how it all works out.

Robert - have you used the Installation Manager for the other Rational products before (like RSM/RSD)?

It is mentioned in part 3 of the New and Noteworthy under the 'Install'
section. What you are referring to is what we call 'shell sharing',
which is actually different (subtly I admit) from 'install into existing
eclipse'. You will not see the install into existing eclipse wizard
page in the RTC installation manager install in M5a (it will be
available in M6). You would use that option if you were attempting to
install RTC into an existing eclipse sdk or other eclipse product that
was not installed using the IBM Installation Manager.

However, you can do what was requested here using M5a. That is, shell
share with the eclipse 3.3-based version of RSM (7.0.5).

If you already have the necessary RSM installed, just download and run
the installation manager (installer) version of the RTC client. On the
'Location' page in the install wizard the default choice is 'Create a
new package group'. Select the 'Use the existing package group' radio
button instead and you should see a list of package groups. Select the
package group into which you installed RSM and click next and the
installation manager will update the configuration to include both RSM
and RTC. You can also start by installing RTC and selecting that
package group when you install RSM.

Hope that helps...
