Folders disappearing in a plan?

I have a user who created some folders in his plan, put work items in them and was in and out of RTC working.
Then today, the folders are not in his plan --- is there something he could have done to reset the folders to the top and defects and enhamncements folders?

Hi there,

folders are specific to a plan and the selected view mode. Thus, when
looking to a different plan or a different view mode (even though the
view mode might be configured identically) would show a new folder
structure.

I am sure this was within the scope of a single release plan.
