Is it possible to restore a deleted state and action from a workitem's workflow?

We have accidentally deleted an action and state of our defect workflow and later found out that 3 of the defects were in the deleted state and we are not able to change the state of those 3 defects now.
Is it possible to restore the deleted state and the action?

Also, Is there any other way we can change the state of these 3 defects to something else?

yes, update the workflow and states
then select those three workitems and 'synchronise' them to get them connected to the new workitem definition.

you have to pick the ID in eclipse when displaying the workitem output from a query
