Client upgrades to 2.0

Hi

Any suggestions from anyone on the following:

I am working with a group about to upgrade from 1.0.1.1 to 2.0. Server upgrade is not a problem but what about all the clients. In particular, we don't really know if people have installed RTC clients from scratch, or installed into an existing Eclipse instance.

Is there a way to get a list of the required plugins from a base Eclipse install that are pre-reqs for RTC 2.0 Eclipse clients?

I suspect that the Installation Manager would handle some of this (well - at least stop the install and report missing pre-reqs) - but we are not able to use an IM install for various reasons.

What is the recommended version of base Eclipse we should install, or tell the users to install?

many thanks

anthony

In general, just do "Help -> About" in the standard client to see what
version of Eclipse is being used by default.

For RTC-2.0, you will see that it is based on Eclipse 3.4.2.

Or is this not what you were asking about?

Cheers,
Geoff

Hi Geoff

Ah - didn't think to check the Help->About for the basic Eclipse version (it is very, very late here :-)

Actually it was what other bits are needed with a very plain 3.4.2 install of Eclipse. I am not sure which bits are from the Eclipse install and which are from the RTC install. Do we need to install EMF or similar plugins before RTC will install as a plugin?

I will take a proper look at the Help->About and see if I can figure it out.

Hello Anthony,
RTC 2.0 is based on top Eclipse 3.4.2 + a couple of fixes.
If installing RTC 2.0 on top base Eclipse 3.4.2, be sure to have the 3
fixes in place.
Please refer to

Thanks.
Eric.

In the RTC 2.0 installation zip file, I don't see a file of the type that Installation Manager uses to connect to a repo. I also see no executable within the RTC 2.0 zip file to launch installation. How do you install this product?

Hi Perry

The zip file version has a great install process :-), you un-zip the file (it will create a <unzip>\jazz\client directory.

If you use the downloads that are called zip versions - they all just unzip. The other ones install using an IBM tool called the Installation Manager. This is a lot more flexible in terms of installing on top of existing Eclipse instances, or into another Rational product like RAD or RSA.

Thanks for the pointer about the patches for 3.4.2 - I missed that bit.

Where does the zip file need to be unzipped to in the file system?

Anywhere - I tend to unzip to my drive root (eg: c:\) so I have a nice short path name. This is for Windows and gives me a client path of c:\jazz\client. You can also unzip the server on to the c:\ drive too - it will be added to c:\jazz\server.

We are also planning an upgrade to 2.0 (from 1.0.1) and are confident with the server portion. Re. the client, our user community uses a variety of client installation methods (some zip, some IIM (some into existing Eclipse env and others standalone)) and my questions are with respect to the eclipse workspace:

Are there steps they need to take to ensure they can resume "work in progress" (i.e. changes in the eclipse workspace but not committed to the repository workspace) after the upgrade?

If using the zip method, do they simply open the old eclipse workspace with the new install?
