How to preserve links when copying work items

Is it possible to preserve the links of a work item - requirements, tests, other work items, etc - when copying work items to the same project area?  When the story is not complete, users want to split the story into two parts by copying the original and preserving all of the links in the copy.  Is there a setting somewhere?

 Creating a work item copy can not preserve the links. There are some same discussion in the forum. The only way is creating work item template and then create new work items from the template.
